Coach Yourself Roundtable By Tim Patterson If
there’s one word that describes the standard career path in the culinary
world, it’s change. Most people in the food and wine world started out
doing something else, and once they’ve decided to follow their true
appetites, they’re likely to go through three or four re-inventions
along the way—from cook to food writer to cooking teacher to publicist
and back again, or any one of a hundred other scenarios.Which means the Food Society Roundtable October 12 with noted career coach Antonia Allegra was right on the money—indeed, getting paid what you’re worth was one of the topics discussed. Toni (it’s Antonia on her business card, Toni to most of the world) opened the session at the showroom of Chef’s Table sponsor Dacor in South San Francisco by describing herself as a “launcher”—of projects, concepts, and people. For an energetic and motivated audience of members determined to launch or re-launch themselves in new directions, it was definitely hours well spent. An opening round of self-introductions revealed a wealth of pent-up talent, a number of promising and plausible makeover plans, and a refreshing collective sense of humor. Toni paged through the extensive handout she had distributed, touching on everything from prevailing pay scales to business card design. Attendees did a pair of on-the-spot exercises, generating and discussing “dream” wish lists and more practical six-month plans. The take-home message, which was also one of the first observations Toni offered, was that the secret of success is becoming your own coach, finding ways to prod yourself to think fresh and big, mining your own skill set to find hidden talents, making sure your verbal priorities are your active priorities. While nobody came away from the program with a magic bullet, everyone left with some extra inspiration. As participants munched on an array of tasty bites provided by Dacor, plans were drawn up for a Career Change SIG. Stay tuned for details. |
