Thirty-two Food Society members gathered on the patio of B Star Bar (Clement St., San Francisco) for a culinary voyage to Burma and beyond on the nippy evening of September 27. Traveling Table diners stayed toasty, however, thanks to heat lamps and a generous parade of dishes, all of them delicious, rich in flavor, and many seasoned with warming peppers. B Star Bar is the second restaurant for Joycelyn Lee, owner of the popular Burma Superstar nearby. Joycelyn explained that B Star Bar offers Pan-Asian dishes influenced by Chinese, Thai, and Japanese cuisines. We are happy to report that she and her team have assembled a fabulous menu of delicious items. Our meal began with spicy lotus root chips. A series of appetizers followed, wooing diners with full flavors and intriguing texture combinations. Kabocha squash fritters melted in our mouths after a satisfying crunch. A tempura dipping sauce brightened batter-coated Agedashi Triple Mushrooms. Grilled calamari were tossed with cherry tomatoes, shallots and peanuts in a basil-cilantro vinaigrette, a tasty new version of toothsome squid. A standout entrée was Kau Soi (coconut chicken noodles), described as “bordertown cuisine,” not really Burmese or Thai. The coconut-milk-enhanced noodles were tossed with pickled mustard greens and ground chicken and finished with a crunch. Other entrées included Claypot Chicken Biryani and Spicy Seafood Stew. Even after this feast, we were blown away by the freshness and intense flavor of sautéed bean sprouts and pea shoots. Desserts, so often an afterthought at Asian restaurants, were a revelation, luring even the fullest diners to partake. The delicate, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate soufflé cake was elevated to new heights with potent ginger ice cream. Pleasantly chewy black rice pudding with coconut-cream was bursting with rich coconut flavor. Food Society members vowed to return again soon to revisit new favorites and try more of B Star Bar’s delicious cooking. |
