February 2008 Wine SIG

“Best of Show Cabernet Sauvignons for under $15” was the theme for the February Wine SIG at the home of Gary Arsham. The ten attendees blind tasted six California selections and two non-Californian “ringers.” The California wines garnered awards in the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Variations in nose, body, oak, and fruit were astonishing for a single varietal. Personal preferences were clear − some savored wines that others spat!

The stand-out favorite was the 2005 Tatachilla McLaren Vale from Australia. Although only the fourth wine tasted, rules were broken as we sampled it again with a peppery Walnut Asiago Biscotti. The addition of food may have swayed votes in favor of this ringer, but the cracker perfectly complemented the gentle acid and balanced oak of this wine. In contrast, the 2006 Hahn Estates with its spicy nose and juicy berry notes was outstanding with dark chocolate, in our case a smooth-as-silk fair trade 70% dark chocolate by Divine Chocolate, (available at Berkeley Bowl, Bittersweet Cafés, and Mollie Stones).
