SFPFS Cooking Teacher SIG Meeting March 18, 2008 By Ann Wheeler The Cooking Teacher SIG had a convivial meeting at Karen Gilbert’s home in Novato on March 18th. Karen hosted Rene Matthew, Carl Drosky, Barbara Federoff, Kathy Leonard, Dorothy Nicholson, Joyce Sigman, Julie Logue-Riordan, Michelle Stern, and Ann Wheeler. Our conversation about career alternatives and venues for cooking teachers was sparked by Karen’s well-equipped, spacious home kitchen. We had a lively discussion on alternatives to full-service, independent catering and on how to make a business work on several levels: for example, sharing delivery costs from a commercial kitchen, or setting up flexible space for teaching, cooking, and events. Michelle Stern gave an impromptu chalk-talk on her business conducting events and after school programs in homes, schools, and recreation centers. Michelle has a stable of teaching chefs with no overhead, and keeps her costs low by marketing her business through recreation center catalogues and a very effective website. On the website, she collects information on how clients heard about her. She finds blogging very good for networking and a good blogger becomes a credible online source. Clients also feel online ads lend credibility. She has found press opportunities also generate business calls. Michelle recommends getting a good accountant and not using your own time to do accounting. To Michelle, the best way to learn to deal with adults is to work with children first. Rene led a discussion on pricing and how to attract customers at a price point that allows you to cover your expenses and make it worth your time. Group members will give anonymous pricing data to Rene, who will compile it to share with the group. Future events: • Rene will be arranging a field trip to COPIA. Meetings will be held every 2 months on the third Tuesday of the month. • Barbara Shenson will host the next SIG in Burlingame on May 20th. Michelle Stern will organize a carpool from Marin to Burlingame. • July 15th in the East Bay- Lamorinda area. • September 16th in Marin. Please contact Rene Matthew if you have any questions about the Cooking Teacher SIG at (415) 883-6339 or email: rene.matthew@comcast.net |
