An Intimate Summer Supper in Berkeley
Monday, June 23, 2008
By Kara Nielsen

A lively group of 36 Food Society members and guests filled Digs Bistro to the rafters for our summer Traveling Table and enjoyed a delicious market-inspired summer meal.

Digs Bistro is the above-ground restaurant of a team of hard-working restaurant pros who previously housed Digs “underground.” For several years, the group cooked multi-course meals in an Oakland home. When an unhappy neighbor exposed the practice, Digs rolled up its knives and found a permanent home October 2007 in Berkeley in a charmer of a location that was previously Olivia and A La Carte.

Behind the stoves at Digs Bistro are Heidi DiPippo, formerly of Yankee Pier and Lark Creek Inn, both in Larkspur, and Justin Sconce, former sous chef at Berkeley’s Rivoli. Jesse Kupers serves as manager while also juggling a day job. Heidi was on hand to speak to our group about the experience and the restaurant’s casual, fresh fare that should remind guests of home. Her staff of three servers did a wonderful job attending to our needs. Their tidy but complete moderately priced wine list was also a hit.

The meal began with Digs’ signature charcuterie plate with house-made treats including bacon, chicken liver mousse and duck ham. A sumptuous sweet corn soup, warmed by spicy andouille sausage bits was a star of the evening. We tucked into one of two summery entrees: tender pork loin topped with pickled peaches served with savory mustard greens and a fresh-flavored succotash and flaky grilled sea bass surrounded by a colorful blend of green beans, squash, tomatoes and olives, topped with saffron aioli. Our perfectly prepared white peach and blackberry galette got everyone talking about the amazing vanilla ice cream from Three Twins, a San-Rafael-based producer selling at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market.

After dinner, as we spilled out to the sidewalk in late evening light, we all decided a fine time was had by all over a lovely and lovingly-prepared meal.
