Tasting the Gulf with the Southern Foodways Alliance November 6, 2006 by Nancy Freeman Some food organizations devote themselves to sheer enjoyment; some document past foodways; some preserve traditional flavors and some provide education and networking opportunities. The Southern Foodways Alliance does all of the above at its annual symposiums while providing a rollicking good time—and a healthy serving from devoted sponsor Jack Daniels. This October’s shindig explored the lifestyles and foodways of the Gulf South from Florida to Texas. Speakers traced the thin line that divides the South from the Caribbean and discussed the cuisine of Cubans in Ybor City (Florida) and Vietnamese in Biloxi (Mississippi). Some of these ethnic dishes, like banh mi, made their way onto our plates at mealtime. A high point was the award of the annual Keeper of the Flame Award to Tommy Ward, owner of 13 Mile Oyster Company in Appalachicola, Florida. Not only did Tommy accept his award graciously, he showed up with a huge bag of oysters which participants guzzled happily with Saturday night’s dinner. For non-southerners who have discovered the South and its cuisine through the SFA, the organization has provided a warm and welcoming eye-opener to culinary traditions and a deeply ingrained hospitality unmatched anywhere else in the country. For transplanted southerners, it provides a way to maintain ties to their home region. “I am geographically removed from my southern heritage,” says Food Society member Terry Wuerthner. “But my family has lived in Louisiana consistently since my ancestors arrived there in the 1700s. Belonging to SFA keeps me connected to those roots, as well as to southern food, culture and people.”
