Blenheim Apricot Food Tour

In July, a dozen SFPFS members made the trip to Hollister to sample the season's remaining Blenheim apricots and to meet farmers who are trying to keep the Blenheim alive. Local statistics tell a sobering tale: where 50 farmers grew Blenheim apricots on some 4,000 acres in the Santa Clara Valley a decade ago, today eight farmers and less than 1,100 acres remain.

Growers are looking to food industry professionals to help stimulate demand for the Blenheim, which has been named to Slow Food USA's endangered foods list. "It's about educating the public," said SFPFS member Nora Tong, owner of Nora's Patisserie, a wholesale bakery in San Francisco. "(The farmers) need our support."
