Reel Food - Castro Theatre

Food + film = REEL fun! The San Francisco Professional Food Society's first-ever gala event, REEL FOOD: An Insider's Guide to Cooking in the Movies, attracted a full house to San Francisco's famed Castro Theatre on Monday, November 10. This one-night-only food and film extravaganza, emceed by KRON-TV's Jan Wahl, celebrated both professional and amateur chefs with a cinematic exploration of culinary arts and a star-studded chef's reception in the Castro Mezzanine.

Chefs Altman and Heffernan

The event kicked off with local chef and Bay Café host Joey Altman and Ritz Carlton Executive Chef Kerry Heffernan's hysterical "he said/she said" commentary during a big screen presentation of some of the most infamous cooking scenes from American and foreign films. Next on the menu was San Francisco filmmaker Cecil Feeder's new documentary, "Our Lady of Tamale," a short film celebrating Mission District icon Virginia Ramos. Housekeeper by day and homemade tamale maker by night, Virginia is famous for providing hot tamales to hungry South of Market bar patrons.

The main course featured the premiere of Scott France's "Cat's in the Kitchen," a real-world style documentary starring Food Network Chef Cat Cora. Capturing the behind-the-scenes preparations of Cat's first dinner at New York's prestigious James Beard House, "Cat's in the Kitchen" kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The evening concluded with a festive food and wine reception in the Castro Mezzanine where guests were able to mingle with the evening's stars and taste a tantalizing array of dishes prepared by top Bay Area chefs and specialty food purveyors including: Virignia Ramos (star of "Our Lady of Tamale"), The Ritz-Carlton, Artisan Foie Fras, Tsar Nicolai Caviar, Inc., New Delhi Restaurant, Catch, The Franciscan, Betelnut, Campton Place, Bix, Citizen Cake, Trinchero Family Estates, illy caffe North America, Inc., St. George Spritis, Tequila Amate and Sole H2O.

The San Francisco Professional Food Society was proud to present a portion of the event's proceeds to Project Open Hand, a Bay Area organization that provides food and nourishment for the men, women and children it serves.
