FOOD FIGHT! A Lively Discussion of Today's Most Challenging Food Choices October 22, 2004 | The Commonwealth Club of California | San Francisco ![]() On October 22nd, The San Francisco Professional Food Society hosted FOOD FIGHT: an ambitious, half-day forum that explored the risks and benefits of today's most challenging food claims and policies--and the impact of our food choices globally, nationally and in our neighborhoods.
![]() Please click on images to see larger version The comments of the first panel addressed the notion of how information gets communicated to food professionals and the general public. Starting with what "newsworthy" means (according to Beth Weise of USA Today) when it comes to food issues, and moving on to how food gets labeled (mercury in fish, for example, with Janet McDonald of the FDA and Zeke Grader weighing in), and how companies handle a food "crisis" (Rob Hurlbut of Niman Ranch and Bill Layden of Edelman PR).
![]() ![]() Please click on images to see larger version Over 100 members of the Bay Area food community joined us for this critical discussion of the influence that we, as food professionals, have on the food we eat and sell. Our speakers (see panel descriptions, below) engaged the audience with insight and opinion that challenged some of the assumptions and understandings we have about food systems.

And thanks to all our members and their guests who joined us.
