Tasting SIG – Peanut Butters 9-24-08 By Jennifer Carden Sometimes I have are really great job, especially when someone invites me to a tasting. The SFPFS Tasting SIG has been around for some time, it started out as a group for recipe developers but quickly morphed into a group who wanted to learn more about ingredients they might use in recipes. The most recent SIG was a peanut butter tasting, which I just couldn’t resist. I love peanut butter, maybe it’s that nostalgic icon, “pb&j” that brings back memories, though I was never a fan of the jelly part. Our sticky conclusion: Each of the 10 member-tasters had a plate with 11 samples of “oil on the top, natural” PB, stirred of course. We evaluated on appearance, taste, smell, and if we’d buy or not. We all tasted the same three products, then bantered our opinions in lively discussion. It was fun and I’d do it again, even with jelly! Vote tally of each taster choosing their top 3: 8 votes – Trader Joes Organic $2.99 Trader Joe’s 7 votes– Santa Cruz Organic, Dark Roast $3.99 WF 6 votes – O Organics $2.50 Safeway 5 votes - Laura Scudder’s $3.89 Safeway, Lucky 4 votes– Santa Cruz Organic, Light Roast $3.99 WF 2 votes– Trader Joes regular $1.79 Trader Joe’s 0 votes - MaraNatha Organic $3.15 Berkeley Bowl, WF 0 votes - Adams $3.89 Safeway, Lucky 0 votes– 365 $1.69 WF Notes on top choices: The overall winner was Trader Joe’s Organic, for its focused peanut taste with mild salt and a bit of sweetness. The second choice, Santa Cruz Dark Roast, at $3.99 was most expensive. We all agreed the deep peanut color and roasty flavor deserved a top score. The third choice O Organics (Safeway brand) was considered to have mild flavor, mild salt and a smooth texture typical of peanut butter.
