In the Pink Wine SIG Rosé Tasting, June 18 By Suzanne Kordesh ![]() In spite of the cool evening fog of the Richmond district, the SFPFS Wine SIG met on June 18 to conjure up images of warm sunny afternoons sipping glowing pink wines, now enjoying a renaissance among wine enthusiasts. Sales of higher end rosés have jumped 45% nationally in the past year, making it one of the hottest segments in all table and sparkling wines. Rodger Helwig's treetop apartment was the setting for eight wine SIG members all sniffing, swirling and swallowing samples of rosés from around the globe. Rodger had scoured San Francisco wine shops, coming up with eleven wines from Argentina, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Golden State. A mystery wine started the proceedings. While it wasn’t one of the evening’s favorites, most agreed that it would be quite quaffable at a picnic on a hot summer afternoon. The wine: Mateus ($4 retail), was for years one of the most consumed rosés in America. Then we got serious, tasting through ten wines of varying hues, some with just a light blush of red, others more deeply colored. Flavors ranged from fresh, light and crisp to full bodied, creamy and broad on the palate. After considerable deliberation, the group picked three favorites: The 2006 Solo Rosa from California, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah for $15; 2006 Domaine de Fontsainte, Gris de Gris, imported from France by Kermit Lynch at $12; and the 2006 Toulouse, Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, from the Anderson Valley, California, retailing for $18. The most expensive rosé in the group was a 2006 Domaine Tempier, Bandol, another Kermit Lynch wine and a favorite at Chez Panisse, at selected wine shops for $29. Although a contender for the top three, the price was considered outside the acceptable range for this varietal. All agreed that with the wide variety of color and taste variation, there’s sure to be a rosé that will please every wine drinker and complement all manner of warm weather fare. |
