Haka Invigorates Sauvignon Blanc Showdown By Mark Magers ![]() Eleven lucky participants in the SFPFS Wine SIG met on June 9 for a comparative tasting of Sauvignon Blancs from France’s Loire Valley and New Zealand’s Marlborough Region. Since these two nations also meet with some regularity on the rugby pitch, the tasting commenced with a video of The Haka, the traditional Maori war dance, performed by the NZ All Blacks in a match against – who else? France. ![]() The French took an early lead with their 5 entries. The two favorites were a 2006 Vin de Pays du Jardin by Patient Cottat ($11) described as chalky, relatively dry, with good fruit, grass and citrus; and a 2007 Sancerre, Domaine du Carrou from Dominique Roger ($22) featuring a honey nose and mineral finish. ![]() The Kiwis responded with 5 solid entries from Marlborough (South Island) and one from Martinborough (North Island). Sauvignon Blanc represents 65% of NZ’s wine production. Most grapes are machine harvested, though one of the two top wines, the 2007 Seresin ($19), is hand-harvested, including 5% Semillon grapes. Comments on this wine were: grassy, minerally, with some grapefruit and a long finish. The other top vote-getter was the ubiquitous 2007 Kim Crawford ($15 on sale), described as an archetypal NZ SB, and, as one taster said,”a good wine with modest aspirations that fulfilled them all.” ![]() The group decided that there was no “winner” between the two countries, since we learned that the two styles applied to the same grape yielded apples and oranges that defied comparison. The Loire wines were more restrained and fruit-centered, while the Marlboroughs were more in-your-face and bolder, (picture that eponymous man riding his horse circa 1970). The group learned (again) that it is all about what you like when picking wines, and not just what you are told or expect. Thank you to Dede Sampson for hosting, the day before she moved out of her apartment! ![]() |
