The wine SIG enjoyed a fascinating evening
on Monday September 18, sampling a variety of wines while studying
charts and several wine tasting wheels. Roger Campbell led us through
five very distinct wines. Roger is assistant winemaker at Subterranean
Cellars in Berkeley and is working toward his Master of Wine. That a
humble bunch of grapes can be transformed into such a variety of aromas
and flavors never ceases to amaze me!
With the tasting wheels for guidance, Roger
helped us to find specific characteristics in each wine. Below is a
recap of the wines we tasted.
This light straw-colored dry muscat
was the most controversial, coming across as sweet to some, dry but
fruity to others. Flavors were grapey but also citrus, floral, honey,
and some pineapple. This wine paired well with asparagus, which have a
reputation as a wine matching challenge.
Soft yellow color, toasted oak on
the nose, and sweet smoke, with tastes of butter and cream and a rich,
"fat" body. A typical California Chardonnay.
Light, clear Burgundy color with an
herbaceous resinous quality to the nose. Nicely balanced with slight
wood and acidity, some pomegranate and a lovely autumn taste that
reminded us of wet leaves in the forest (in a good way). We loved this
wine.
A dark Bordeaux with a higher
percentage of Petite Verdot than usual. Dark purple with an herbal
blackberry nose. More structure and body with higher acids and tannins.
Another winner.
Inky dark with a petrol-eucalyptus
nose. Tastes of ripe raisin and chocolate. Somewhat tannic with a sweet
impression owing to its higher alcohol content at 14.8%.
With the exception of the La Crema
Chardonnay ($12), the wines were purchased at Vintage Berkeley and
ranged from $18 to $23.
