Hard to Say, Easy to Enjoy
The Wine SIG Tastes Gewürztraminer

It was a wonderful twist of fate that May 17 was unseasonably warm in San Francisco. That’s the day the SFPFS Wine SIG met at Victoria Green’s cool city condo for a blind tasting of Gewürztraminer (guh-VURTZ-trah-mee-ner), one of the world’s most enjoyable warm-weather wines.

Ten of us tasted nine wines in succession, each disguised in a brown paper bag. With every pour, swirling, sniffing, and sipping ensued. Most inspired a little discussion—about the flavors and aromas, guesses as to where the wine might be from, and whether it fit our expectations. 

Generally, we expect Gewürztraminer to be medium bodied, with lush fruit and floral notes, often a touch of sweetness, and perhaps a bit of clove/cinnamon/allspice (Gewürz is German for “spice”). Yet many of the wines surprised us with traits often associated with Riesling—a lighter body, more citrus and acidity, and sometimes a touch of effervescence or petrol.

When the wines’ identities were revealed, we learned that they came from as nearby as Sonoma and as far away as France’s Alsace region, and that they ranged in price from $7 to $29. When we voted for our three favorites, the top vote-getter was the second least expensive: Chateau St. Jean’s 2008 Gewürztraminer, at $13. Second place was a three-way tie between Francis Tannahill’s 2008 Washington Gewürztraminer ($23), Handley’s 2007 Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer ($15), and Trimbach’s 2006 Alsace Gewürztraminer ($19). 

The favorites were all over the map, both price- and region-wise. Interestingly, neither the least expensive wine (Angeline’s 2006 Mendocino Gewürztraminer, at $7) nor the most expensive (Corazon’s 2005 Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer, at $29) received a single vote.

With the table already groaning with nine wine bottles, we enjoyed a potluck dinner of Gewürztraminer-friendly foods.

Next up: This summer, we head to Vintage Berkeley’s newest outpost on College Avenue in Elmwood (Berkeley) for a tasting of bargain wines (relatively speaking, at under $20) and a lesson in how to choose them. We look forward to welcoming Vintage Berkeley’s Matt Stevenson as a new SFPFS member.
