fellow SFPFS members and guests to welcome the most auspicious Year of
the Golden Boar! Chef Chu, at his acclaimed and recently renovated
restaurant in Los Altos, will prepare a very special Chinese New
Year-style banquet for us. In addition, he will discuss the symbolism of
traditional New Year’s dishes and explain how he has adapted them over
the years to the American palate. The Year of the Golden Boar occurs only once every sixty years and brings with it much prosperity and good fortune. It is our good fortune to experience Chinese food culture at the table of an expert Chinese chef for an exceptional SFPFS price! $40 includes tax and gratuity; beverages are not included. Due to the symbolism of the many food items on a traditional New Year’s banquet, we regret a vegetarian option is not available. Menu: Candied fruit & nuts for nibbling Served in crisp lettuce cups Cucumber stuffed with dried scallops & shrimp paste, topped with shark fin Whole duck braised in an aromatic soy sauce, served over taro with a chain of gold coins symbolizing prosperity Rare-seared beef steak tossed with lime-miso dressing, basil & purple onion, served over a bed of watercress and cherry tomatoes Kabocha squash filled with traditional New Year Buddha’s Delight (jai), garnished with fresh vegetables Filet of flounder lightly stir-fried with pepper-salt, fresh jalapeno & onion, served over tasty, crunchy fish bones A symbolic dish: “a good harvest of grain signifies the blessing of a nation.” Healthy, fragrant rice & grain mixture stir-fried with mushrooms, dried fruit & onion wrapped in a lotus leaf Kumquat-flavored honey tea rejuvenates the spirit & sweet sesame balls (jeen duey) with red bean paste represent family togetherness and unity For more information on Chef Chu’s: http://www.chefchu.com/mall/c102/s11_new/home.asp Driving directions: http://www.chefchu.com/mall/c102/s11_new/Directions.asp Please register by March 9, 2007.
